Summary/Abstract: As a fundamental social institution, the family is confronted today with situations and different realities, which often lead to its weakening. If the traditional society was relatively rigid with respect to the stability of values, family type or style of life, modern society changes the solid foundation of the family, giving it new roles and destinations. The paper outlines the problems of the family in contemporary society and it is based on a comparative analysis of family values, gender roles and attitudes carried out in a family context. The image of the traditional family, widespread in rural areas, is that of an institution that preserves the traditions and traditional values, with high inertia. The urban environment is dominated by the restructuring of the family: family life is more individualized and democratized, influenced by the dynamics of society.
