Summary/Abstract: Åland is an island commune of Finland in the middle of the Baltic Sea. The tourist industry makes use of the unique history and nature of the region to attract numerous tourists and thus tourism is the most profitable branch of economy in the area. Next to other tourist sights, the area is famous for historical festivities, such as the Gustav Vasa Days held each summer near the castle of Kastelholm. With its natural surrounding and performances the event is a powerful tourist magnet. The "island state" is filled with history and most tourist events are the staged reflections of older or more recent events.
