Summary/Abstract: Europe is all about mutual understanding, about realising ourselves as a social-political-cultural unit of peoples. Europe threatens neither the idea, nor the contingent realities of nationhood. European integration cannot move at a speed faster than than its separate peoples wish. There is very little that is inevitable in this life; but there is something fore-doomed about the plea of the Eurosceptics to turn back the tide of integration that is already flowing and that is most evident in the migration of peoples to where the jobs are, and where the frontiers are open; and in the globalisation - certainly the Europeanisation - of trade. Europe is not the more menacing because it is unstoppable; education is unstoppable, too; our drive to explore the world of ideas is unstoppable.
