Summary/Abstract: The Third Department was Russia’s state security apparatus in the 19th century. The department operated an extensive network of agents who worked both in Russa and abroad. It was their duty to obtain information about any activity that criticized the government. The Department was split up into separate sections and each section had to oversee a particiular political task. The most important task was the observation of any political activity. The documents that have recently become public provide us with new information about spying and intelligence gathering in Russia and abroad.
