Summary/Abstract: The Romanian cultural landscape enriched recently with several articles strongly criticising the ecologism as a fundamentalist discourse. This gave us the opportunity to approach in a more analytical style the problem: is the ecologism necessarily fundamentalistic ? It is shown that a diversity of ecologist ideologies is possible, combining different ontological and ethical assumptions. Consequently, the ecologism is not necessarily fundamentalist. A sociological look at the nongovernmental organizations involved in the environmental market could easily corroborate this theoretical finding. There are, however, publicly dangerous forms of ecologism, such as left holistic and anarchistic ones, which might be the appropriate target for critics. If a reasonable ecologism with maximal public value is to be promoted, its conceptual infrastructure should be compatible with the values of the open society.
