Summary/Abstract: Changes initiated in the 1990s in the Polish economy created the economic instrument letting the central authority support the local authority without the direct involvement of the state budget, which should be considered for the Special Economic Zone. The original intention of calling to life SEZ was to increase investment and economic recovery in selected locations, but with the passage of time (as a result of adjustments to adapt to the needs of investors) zones “scattered” throughout Poland. It can be argued that the current Special Economic Zones are seen as an effective form of support for entrepreneurs, and their functioning undoubtedly contributed to the improvement of the macroeconomic indicators of socio-economic development. The purpose of this article is to assess the impact of Special Economic Zones in Poland, with particular emphasis on Wałbrzych Special Economic Zone “INVEST-PARK”, on local development, and assessment of the prospects for their further functioning.
