Summary/Abstract: Abstract. This article firstly outlines the conceptual framework for the analyses of democracy and market economy in Southeast European countries published in this issue. Secondly, key problems affecting democracy and the market economy in the region are investigated: unsettled statehood conflicts in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Kosovo; patronage policies and governmental interferences with the autonomy of the media, judiciary and parliament; economic and political consequences of the global financial and economic crisis. The article argues that the economic crisis is likely to weaken the advocates of a liberal model of economic and political development in Southeast Europe. Existing democratic deficiencies in the region are likely to persist or to become more serious.
