Evaluation of Criteria of Modern Higher Education in Educational Studies

Summary/Abstract: This article represents the results of the research on the evaluation of criteria of modern higher education in study programmes. The research was based on the consumption that traditional features of higher education such us: academic freedom, institutional autonomy, scientific research, unity of research and teaching, development students' critical thinking should be preserved, despite of global changes in the society. Globalization process brings new requirements for modern universities as well. They have to increase geographical mobility, revise financial issues and renew study programmes looking for higher quality. The results from 15 analyzed educational study programmes of master degree, as well as data collected from interviews with experts and 124 completed questionnaires are presented. While trying to evaluate how criteria of modern higher education are presented in study rogrammes the model was made based on two approaches: firstly, educational studies are interpreted as the system of pedagogical process, where the main attention is paid to relationship between its elements- teaching goals, content, teaching methods, teachers and students- and the criteria of modern higher education. Secondly, the criteria of modern higher education and its indicators are based on liberal and democratic education concepts as well as the requirements set by bologna process for higher education institutions. The results showed that the best represented features are so-called "traditional", based on liberal and democratic concepts in higher education: institutional autonomy, academic freedom, unity of research and teaching, high competence of lectors. Modern features of higher education caused by globalization process and requirements set by bologna process are represented weakly or not represented at all. These are: flexibility of study programmes, active relationship with social partners, orientation to international requirements, modern information base.
