Summary/Abstract: The article is based upon the thesis about folklore as a type of artistic culture and the need deriving from it to study the entire act of culture from the viewpoint of its artistic dimensions and the individual person – as a part of the integral continuum of the artistic subject. The first section of the article considers the two-sided structure of the artistic subject: as an ideal image (in terms of worldview, society and art) and as a substantiation of this ideal through the live and concrete presence of man and his actions. The resulting artistic product (poetic image, musical tune or dance step) should therefore be regarded not as an autonomous artistic “Work” (an approach taken on from the aesthetics of autonomous professional art), but as a peculiar “extension” of the artistic subject, a specific form of materialized human presence. The inclusion of the individual person as a cultural element of the artistic whole is closely connected with the problem of the two-sided existence of the artistic phenomenon – as a unity of virtual and actual existence – and with the question or correlations between the two aspects (relations of opposition, isomorphism and complementation). The last section of the article deals with the various methodological aspects of analysis of the folk art with a view to take into consideration the two-sided nature of the artistic phenomenon.
