Summary/Abstract: Most teachers seem overwhelmed by the difficulty of using materials that are not intended for the classroom. Still, dealing with authentic materials in the classroom seems to be one of the most important tenets in teaching English for Specific Purposes. The Big Book of Knowledge (The Dorling Kindersley, 1994) could be considered one of the best alternatives. Being a publication written in English and for English – speaking readers, its value as an authentic material could not be questioned. In order to demonstrate the practical importance of encyclopedia-like material I will refer to using it for the intermediate level.
