Summary/Abstract: MARITAL CONFESSION OF BOLESŁAW PRUS. SHORT STORIES AFTER 1897 Summary The year 1897 is a breaking point in the life and work of Bolesław Prus. The writer turn fifty and until his death he only writes the short stories (and a novel Dzieci, which is a failure), which never entered the literary canon. I propose to read them anew, in the light of the author’s experience, as a perverse intimate diary. The protagonists of the short stories (such as Historia nieprawdopodobna, Ze wspomnień cyklisty, Widzenie) are grantem a crazy life, fascinations with women, flirting with no consequences, all that the writer refused to himself. The literary characters, thrown into the existence comprehend the alternative: either you live consciously and on your own, fastidiously building the professional position and material well being, or you immerse in love madness and small insanities of pleasure. Envious on the choices of literary characters the married writer indulged a crazy step: a romance and a child born out of wedlock. Trans. M. Bucholc
