Sovereignty-Patriotism and Culture in Globalization/Globalization for and Against

Summary/Abstract: This essay analyses the phenomenon of patriotism, sovereignty and culture, in the context of globalization and global communications. In today’s globalization time and “sovereignty deterioration”, patriotism and culture are the main carriers of identity. Simultaneously, during the process of globalizing communications, a global culture is being created. This essay proposes a question of what should be done to avoid globalization producing situations, where communication and culture will be the preface to conflict of different interests and proportions. The essay offers a few possible answers to this question through a detailed analysis of numerous other works discussing globalization. This essay was first presented at a Symposium called “Globalization and Culture” in Dubrovnik, in October 2002.
