Regionalization of B&H as a Precondition for Integration in EU

Summary/Abstract: In the process of post socialistic transition Bosnia and Herzegovina is passing through several important social-historical processes. The most important one is, certainly, the process of integration to European Union. In an attempt to gain that goal, it is essential to apply European standards in order to fulfil the conditions for accepting to membership of European Union. One of these standards is establishing of regional structure. The role and importance of regionalization in economic and political processes in Europe, has made the need for its institutionalization. On the basis of synthesis of experiences during decades, European Union has established several important institutions which deal with various aspects of regionalization and regional development. Besides, European Union has established legal framework to regulate the rights and obligations of regions, so with various charters, multilateral agreements and conventions it has created preconditions for improvement of regional development and coordination between them. In the process of integration to European Union, Bosnia and Herzegovina has met with challenges of regionalization, cooperation with neighbouring countries but with possibilities of economic and social development of our country through the support of Structural funds that are offered by European Union. That is proved by the fact that 1/3 of budget of European Union (213 billion of Euros) is directed to regional development, cooperation between regions, and specially to development of less developed regions. Regionalization is not only precondition for access to the means which are at the European Union’s disposal for regional development, but more and more important factor in process of all European integrations that are in front of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Acceptance and application of concept of Euro region in Bosnia and Herzegovina, besides of opening possibility of access to the means of European Union for regional development, would contribute to internal political-economic integration of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but to fulfilment of conditions for accepting our country to membership of European Union.
