On the History of the Bulgarian Historical Myths

Summary/Abstract: The goals of this paper is to examine an essential aspect of the activity of Bulgarian intellectuals during the 18th and 19th centuries towards the creation of the ”imagined community” – the nation. The study does not aim at analyzing the Bulgarian literary production of in its entirety, but our attention is focused on the principal moments in the creation of the Bulgarian national narrative with a view of laying accent on the function of the myths in the strategy of the texts. Special attention is paid to the contribution of the authors Paisii Hilendarski, Spiridon, Neofit Bozveli, Neofit Rilski, Vasil Aprilov, Konstantin Fotinov, Ivan Dobrovski, Georgi Rakovski, Liuben Karavelov and Petko Slaveikov who have played a leading role in the evolution of the historical thought of the Bulgarians. The paper examines also the part of the influence of the ideas of J. G. Herder, J. Palacky and J. Venelin in the complex process of the creation of the Bulgarian national identity.
