Summary/Abstract: The visions, imagery, and the discourse on women’s role in Bulgarian and Croatian societies of the beginning of 20th century are implicated in a project for the building of a national identity, as well as for establishing of equal status of a modern nation state citizenship. This brings forth arguments for the “second gender” representatives to be looking for detachment from the socially imposed patterns of femininity and for adequate usage of the cultural sphere for social self-determination at the sight of the new opportunities in a society tending to be driven by vocational skills. Women intellectuals (writers, actresses, women poets and artists) are now trusted with priestly functions, thus giving artistic expression of their internal life, marked by self-reflection on their identity and their social relationship. In this aspect the literary club and lounge culture in Sofia and Zagreb has been examined as an important link within array of social and cultural practices aimed at personality’s transformation, its emancipation from patriarchal values, and its manifestation as a “mobile” individual. The research focuses on the project launched by a sparse group of intellectuals, to structure the cultural sphere of a society shaping up by modernity.
