Summary/Abstract: The ecosystem is the source of many resources including those indispensible for the life of man. These resources are today known under the term “ecosystem services”. They directly and indirectly make possible our survival and improvement of the quality of living. The ecosystem services are classified into different categories covering different services such as: source of food, potable water, climatic regulation, genetic resources, water purification and others. Marshlands, apart from water purification services, biological diversity, protection against floods, also offer tourist services to man. So, said in the most general sense, the essential value of this concept lies in the emphasis of an active and continuous care for the future. The world has given a clear warning of this, and so did Pope John Paul II in the encyclical Centesimus annus No. 37 with the following statement: “Today’s humanity, as concerns this, must be aware of its duties and tasks towards the future generations.”
