Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is twofold. Firstly it focuses on the analysis of radical right-wing parties in Sweden that were either successful in gaining electoral support in the 90´s (New Democracy), or are operating today (mainly Sweden Democrats). Secondly it tries to explain why a strong radical right-wing party is absent in Swedish politics. The article describes the situation in the 70´s when far right parties (Progress parties) experienced an electoral breakthrough in both Norway and Denmark that are culturally, historically or politically close to Sweden. It tries to explain why there was no Swedish counterpart to the Progress Parties and what were the reasons for emergence of New Democracy in the beginning of the 1990´s. Then the article focuses on an analysis of this party, followed by presentation of current strongest far right party – the Sweden Democrats. It argues that due to its origin and program it is too extreme to be acceptable for the Swedish electorate. The last chapter tries to explain why there is no successful radical right-wing party in Sweden, and the possibility of its emergence. It is based on the study of the Swedish sociologist and political scientist Jens Rydgren who explains the factors favourable for emergence of a radical right-wing populist party and the factors working against it. He concludes that the absence of a strong far right party is mainly caused by supply-side factors.
