Summary/Abstract: Mura Drava confluence is very dynamic region in terms of hydro morphology of the riverbed and its floodplain. The Drava River has undoubtedly shifted the position of its mouth to Mura River many times in the past. In the recent decades, these changes were precisely recorded on topographic, aerial and satellite maps. Such dynamics in morphological processes is intimately associated with the rich biodiversity. Dynamic river creates and restores habitats in the succession line from initial vegetation stages to the optimal ones. The researcher has followed through GIS these changes through several decades and rate of the colonization of the bare gravel point bars and its transformation to the optimal stages of the floodplain forest. Willows and poplars, the major constituents of this forest are adapted to long-lasting floods and erosion. Knowledge of the changes in the hydro morphology will help future biological research and will enable better understanding of the floods and erosion, especially in the scope of modern water management under the EU Water Framework Directive.
