Summary/Abstract: In the period before the use of chemical insecticides, the plant Pyrethrum (Tanacetum cinerariifolium) was in great demand in the world, especially in the American market. This indigenous Dalmatian plant became the leading export article in the interwar period, thus exceeding both the wine and oil trade, as well as the prospering service industry. Studies done by leading experts in agriculture and chemistry have confirmed it is a powerful insecticide, yet the economic background of production and trade has not been fully explored. This study analyses archive materials and relevant literature to explore the trade of Pyrethrum in the Dubrovnik district in the times of the monarchy. The reasons of non-sustainability for Pyrethrum were established, as well as the neglect of this exceptional natural insecticide, a currently major product in ecological productivity.
