Summary/Abstract: The focus of the research is the concept of childhood in Andrey Platonov’s short story “Kotlovan (The Pit)” and a problem of translating the work into Swedish (Grundgropen. Övers. Kajsa Öberg Lindsten, 2007). Comparative study of the most significant text parts (original and translation) unfolding one of the key concepts of Platonov’s works – the concept of childhood – was carried out on the lexical, narrative, plot, and image levels. A conclusion was drawn that К. Lindsten’s translation was targeted not only at preservation of Platonov’s words and phrases but also at preservation of the author’s image. К. Lindsten succeeded in delivering to the Swedish reader the main values of the author’s childhood from the stand point of artistic philosophy: social-historical, ethical, sacral-futurological, ontological. He also succeeded in reproducing a metaphoric plan of Platonov’s concept of childhood both in its utopian and anti-utopian meanings.
