Summary/Abstract: up on the basis of Udmurt materials, which are compiled and published from the 18th century to 1917. At present an absolute majority of them are kept outside the Udmurt Republic — in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Vyatka, and Perm. Monuments of both written language and dialects are among the most important sources for the research of the formation and functioning of a language, on the one hand, and for the development and enrichment of the language system at all levels of its literary form, on the other hand. In order to provide efficient use of the early monuments of written Udmurt in research and teaching, their originals as well as duplications should certainly be gathered in Udmurt State University, which is a leading center for studying and teaching Udmurt philology. The most important manuscripts should be published, and those publications that have become a bibliographical rarity should receive a new edition.
