Summary/Abstract: The First World War is one of the major turning points of world politics. Therefore, one of the characteristic features of the postwar period is the quest for a new world order. The emergence of International Relations as a separate discipline is a product of this quest. In this context, this article deals with the effects of First World War on the emergence of International Relations. In first place the impact of the war on the international system and the quest for a new order will be addressed. Afterwards, the autonomy of the discipline of International Relations will be explained under three questions. First, how did the First World War helped to identify the disciplines’ own topics and questions relatively distinguishable from other disciplines. Second, how has the postwar period led to the emergence of the institutions of the new discipline. Finally, how did the discipline set up its own terminology and determined its theoretical boundaries through the theoretical debates.
