Summary/Abstract: This paper will attempt to offer a cultural reading of the construction of the city and the urbanity in Pavao Pavličić’s crime fiction as the Croatian literary criticism lacks in analysis of Croatian crime fiction that would be separable of its genre or artistic status. In the introduction I attempt to demonstrate that there is a constant relation between city and urban experience on the one hand and crime fiction on the other in the case of both foreign and Croatian crime stories. The main part of this paper focuses on the representation of the city and urbanity in relation to the integral philosophy of everyday life in selected Pavličić’s texts. It investigates the strategies of silencing and taming of the libertine as well as the signs of deviant, resistant and transgressive behaviour characteristic of every urban city all the way to the annulations of urbanity trapped in its nostalgic past or mimed as a small provincial town with its modes of living.
