Summary/Abstract: Truancy is an unjustified and unauthorized school absence. As such absences are very negative and disorganize the educational process, they require a strong response from teachers and educators. In this article truancy is discussed in the context of a broader phenomenon of refusal to go to school and its conditions, including behavioural disorders, depression and deviant behaviour. It also presents the results of research conducted on 299 students and 60 teachers from several secondary schools (middle schools and high schools). The tool used was a questionnaire containing the same set of questions for both students and teachers, relating to the following issues: the scope of the phenomenon, the causes, the course of truancy, emotions and behaviour of students and reactions of teachers to this phenomenon. The results show a significant difference in the perception of the highlighted aspects of school truancy among students and teachers. The perception of teachers is consistent with the negative stereotype of a truant student. In addition, teachers see fewer truancy factors attributable to the school and their own ineffective preventive action.
