Summary/Abstract: The subject of geographical space, considered from a variety of perspectives, occupies a key place in the study of international relations. The paradigm of geopolitics belongs to one of the most controversial of these perspectives. Geopolitics played a key theoretical and practical role in the 20th century (as a political doctrine). In the second half of the century the concept of geoculture began to appear. According to the French author Christian Daudel, geoculture was an innovative extension of the established geopolitical paradigm. The concept of geoculture addresses the relationship between natural and axiological space. The use of this concept in the study of international relations allows the scope of research to be substantially broadened and the signifi cance of the cultural factor to be given proper weight in connection with the shaping and development of international relations. This applies to both historical and contemporary research. The ongoing process of European integration can also be analyzed from the perspective of the geocultural paradigm in terms of the relationship that exists between national and regional cultural spaces and pan-European cultural space.
