Summary/Abstract: The present paper explores the status of the epistle in Antiquity, trying at the same time to circumscribe some of the fundamental attitudes towards the letter and letter-writing, as well as recurrent themes and motifs. The article is focused on the letter collection of the Athenian philosopher, Alciphron, and Ovid’s Epistulae Heroidum.
