Summary/Abstract: This essay treats the development of a discourse of self-orientalisation amongst the Muslims of Sarajevo and of Bosnia and Herzegovina more generally during the later 19th and early and middle 20th centuries and the international context within which they developed. Three areas are isolated as particularly instructive in this regard, namely: the question of the removal of the veil, the question of shifting attitudes towards architecture and urban living in Sarajevo, and the question of the constitution of the Bosnian Muslims or Bosniaks as a nation (nacija). I close the essay with a consideration of how these attitudes are reflected in Aleksa Šantić’s beloved poem, Emina.
