Summary/Abstract: Cartesian Dualism: An Unresolved Equation? The study presents the Cartesian dualism by emphasizing the debate which has been developed in the context of the European modern philosophy around the mind/body interaction and other key ideas related with this topic specific to the philosophy of mind. The metaphysical and theological motivation claimed by Descarted himself is analyzed, in connection with all the debates from the XVI and XVII centuries when, after the fifth Council of the Lateran (1512-1517), problems as the existence of God or the immortality of the soul were discussed from a rationalist perspective. The correspondence between Descartes and the princess Elisabeth of Bohemia is presented to show the insolvable aporia raised by the Cartesian dualism.
