Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the end to which a literary prize might serve and the nature of the relationship between politics, literature and distinction. The study focuses on the 1940s-1950s, the scene is Italy, and the writers in question are the ones associated traditionally with the Italian neo-realism. In a larger context the text discusses also the figure of the committed artist, the intervention of the Italian Communist Party, which led to the institutionalization of some of that country’s literary prizes, the idea that cultural democratization results in the bringing together of the intellectuals and the ordinary people, and, finally, the imposing of a certain pattern of relations among writers, politics, book publishing and readers.
