Literary Prizes in Greece

Summary/Abstract: The most prestigious literary awards in Greece are those given by the Ministry of Culture, the so called state Literary Awards, as well as the Athens Academy Awards. Both prizes with long tradition are awarded in different categories (for novel, short story, essay, children’s book). In the recent years the awards distributed by the literary magazine “Diavazo” are also constantly earning reputation but the most favorite are the Readers’ Choice Awards as the only ones taking into account the readers’ preferences. They started as an initiative of the national Book Centre in September 2005 aiming to encourage the public to read more books and discuss them and today the results can already be seen.
