Summary/Abstract: The article raises the question whether intentions of individual utterances can be identified with speech functions. The author, referring to Renata Grzegorczykowa's model presented in the text Problem funkcji języka i tekstu w świetle teorii aktów mowy (The Question of Language and Speech Functions in the Light of the Theory of Speech Acts, 1991), points out that generally they are not equal notions. He also indicates that intentions of speech are belong more to the metal sphere and that they do not have to manifest in the speaker's communicative strategies nor can they be described based on speech acts' results. The author simultaneously points to the multi-functional character of individual speech acts. He claims, referring to specific literary sources, that the context of utterances must always be considered while describing functions of utterances.
