Summary/Abstract: The study Dialogue and empathy in helping relationship explores human becoming in helping relationships. It analyses the necessary and sufficient conditions for generating change in terms of the helping relationship’s qualities. These conditions are then discussed in relation to directive versus nondirective approach, as an expression of social conformity versus autonomy dilemma, or change versus control dilemma in social work, counselling and psychotherapy. The study brings into discussion the ontology of the helping relationship and make comparison between the psychosocial conditions of the helping relationship in the Carl Rogers’ person-centered approaches and the human becoming that Martin Buber tackled in his philosophy of dialogue.
