Literary studies: a legitimacy in crisis

Summary/Abstract: The author offers a discussion on the legitimacy of literary studies being put in crisis as the role of literature is getting marginalised in the society. Literary scholars find it increasingly hard to give a decent reply to the question about what profits or gains from practicing their discipline can be offered to those not dealing with it. Literary studies and research appear self-creative most of the time, as they serve the purpose of building the identities of those engaged in the discipline. This, however, is contradictory to the fact that the domain takes advantage of public funding – with the result that the society provides means to literary scholars who tackle their self-creation.
