Summary/Abstract: There is still some dispute over to what extent democracy in the country was crippled in the spring of 1945. At that time, the revival of several traditional organisations, of which the strongest was the Agrarian Party, was precluded. Blocking the party was an important step to the Communist takeover of power. The Agrarians had for years been an important bulwark of democracy and had been a pillar of power in the First Republic. Circumstances led them to face an authoritarian regime during the Second Republic, when – during the war – they both took part in the resistance and collaborated. The newly installed National Front regime justified the non-revival of the Agrarians on the grounds of their treachery.
