Summary/Abstract: Abstract. The Slovak Republic has refrained from recognizing Kosovo’s statehood. The arguments underlying this decision are the following: 1) such a unilateral proclamation of independence violates international law; 2) the proclamation might be instrumentalised as a precedent by other ethnic groups; 3) Slovakia’s traditionally good relations with Serbia should be safe-guarded; and, finally, 4) the unilateral proclamation of independence bears a highly destabilising potential. In spite of these arguments, Slovakia has supported both NATO’s KFOR mission and the EU’s EULEX mission, in order to contribute to international efforts to foster stability in the region.
