Summary/Abstract: Trends in 50th century literary and art criticism have been tortuous and whimsical, just as they were in literature and art, perhaps more so: they ranged from modern to what we call post- modernism, from criticism to so-called post-criticisnz. Diverse roads stretched before the critic, leading him from commitment to the end of Utopia (the end of ideology) from critical realism to realism without shores, from sympathy to deconstruction. Many of them, having lost confidence in themselves and their choice, returned to their points of departure, though not by the same route. Strange and unexpected itineraries are traced on the map of contemporary criticism.
