Summary/Abstract: The year 2004 has seen Turkey in the midst of a flurry of diplomatic activity that confirmed the thesis that Turkey is on the way to become an important power in a large area between continents and three seas. For nearly a century, this country was looked on as a strategic territory to be treated as a marginal asset for Western security interests. This year’s activities have demonstrated that Turkish people and its strategic, economic, military and socio-political assets are of major importance to major blocs and for the region. The multi-faceted diplomacy of Turkey in 2004 that laid great emphasis on obtaining a date for the beginning of accession negotiations with EU has shown remarkable developments in many fronts. This diplomacy was complemented in no less degree by internal monetary, legal and social reforms implemented in the course of the year.
