Summary/Abstract: The status of intellectuals was very problematic in the ideological concept of communist society – they were neither the victors nor the defeated. The image of intellectuals in literature of the period 1948–89 changed alongside the course of time. The paper deals with the problem of depicting intellectuals in so-called “normalization” prose, with special regard to the way the protagonists coped with the problematic period called Stalinism. The core of the analyzed material are social-historical novels describing the post-war political and social development. Although many Normalization writers (or their families) were persecuted in this period, the events of the 50’s could not be criticized or denounced in the offi cial production. This was a reason why a new model of protagonist was created. The overcoming of doubts and complicated troubles lead this “new” protagonist eventually to the side of the “victors”, loyal to the new, neostalinistic regime. On the contrary, the characters that on the one hand participated enthusiastically in “the construction of society”, but then shared in the events of the Prague Spring with same enthusiasm were represented as the “traitors”.
