Summary/Abstract: The author of the article intends to show Władysław Tatarkiewicz’s contribution to the development of the history of European aesthetics, as he was an aesthetic historian himself. What is particularly unique is his concept of ‘implied aesthetics’ (the aesthetics of artists), included in a piece of art; like a painting, a poem, a sculpture, a musical piece. Before his 3-volume History of Aesthetics, historians had depicted the history of aesthetics, reduced to two periods: antiquity and contemporary times. Medieval and Modern Times aesthetics used to be put on the margin or ignored completely. Due to his introduction of aesthetics implicite to research on the history of aesthetics, Tatarkiewicz devoted a lot of space to the 3–18 centuries. Thanks th to the aesthetics implicite, he gave a faithful picture of the history of aesthetics and its development. He was the first aesthetic historian to provide readers with a full compendium.
