Summary/Abstract: The author of this study develops the concept of the metaphor as discussed by D. Davidson and R. Rorty as a special kind of figurative language and as a picture without cognitive content. On the basis of an analysis of the Czech symbolist poet Otokar Březina, the author displays transfers of meaning from the area of scientific discourse to the speech acts of poets during the period of the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. These transfers led to complex transformations of the poetic language as a whole in the period of Modernism. Other examples from works by T.S. Eliot and W. Stevens show that this morphologic reshaping of modern poetics under the influence of new metaphors is not a local and isolated process, but a general change of paradigm in Euro-American culture.
