Summary/Abstract: The author offers a synoptic view of philosophical inquiry in Romania from the beginnings to the present. The prominent characteristics of Romanian philosophy are presented in detail, with references to the works of the most important authors (Titu Maiorescu, Lucian Blaga, Constantin Noica, Mircea Florian). These features include the following: the association of philosophy with literature; the obsessive preoccupation with the question of Romanian national identity (românism); the constant debate on the desirability of modernisation; the interest for the situation and the legitimacy of metaphysics; the dominance of the philosophy of culture and the philosophy of history.
