Summary/Abstract: This article seeks an answer the question whether nationalism and statism, considered to be the two “natural temptations” of orthodox spirituality, essentially belong to orthodoxy. The author argues that, for historical reasons, the specific problems of modernity could not be raised within the confines of the Byzantine-Slavonic religious culture. Accordingly, the Orthodox Church tends to meet the challenges of the present with distorted reactions. A future solution to this problem could be based on reversing the process of internal secularization brought about by the traditional link between the Orthodox Church and the state.
