Summary/Abstract: The Polish alternative theatrical movement is renowned for the part it played as a catalyst in the change of Communist Poland. Groups such as Ósmego Dnia, Provisorium or Pomarańczowa Alternatywa undertook, at an ethical level, the mission of protesting against the precarious life conditions and the Communist ideological virus. These theatres work within the frame of the po-litical trend of the Polish alternative theatre of the last Communist decades. However, there were other groups that placed their stakes on the aesthetic rather than the ethical. The most prominent are Scena Plastyczna, Gardzienice and Akademia Ruchu. The hereby study aims at presenting briefly each of these theatres and at including them in either of the two main directions of the Polish alternative theatre of the ’70s and ’80s: the poetic and the political.
