Summary/Abstract: Violent behavior of prison inmates stems primarily from faults in the system, but also from individuals’ temper and behavior, i.e. from inmates and prison employees. Prisons and prison management and some prison officers encourage and approve of existence of informal groups, i.e. inmates’ communities, which they use to exercise control over prison inmates. However, this false sense of peace is based on compromises and its price is huge, usually paid by inmates who want to serve their sentences in peace, as well as by employees and other prison officers who try to do their jobs professionally. This informal system is an invisible meeting place of all participants who are mistakenly thought to be in constant conflict. However, there are more similarities than differences between these two entities. We can identify several types of prison officers, as is the case with prisoners
