Summary/Abstract: Martin A. Hansen’s novel The Liar (1950) is one of the most frequently analyzed works in Danish literature. Nevertheless, one cannot find many studies which have systematically dealt with its Christian symbols. This article analyzes in detail the Christian meaning of names, numbers and the central symbol of woodcock in The Liar. The author of the article also points out the role these symbols play in the text: they reinforce its Christian-existentialist dimension and significantly contribute to the fact that the novel can be viewed as a demonstration of the writer’s conviction of the importance of faith in God.
