Summary/Abstract: Since Paardekooper (1956, 1962, 1986), Klein (1977) and Van den Berg (1979), it has been assumed that in metaphorical NPs like dieDet1 schatN1 van een jongenN2 (that treasure of a boy), N1 and N2 agree in gender (de schat and de jongen) if Det1 is a gender marker. The explanation for this observation has been sought in the syntactic structure of the NP. Det1 is not a modifier of N1 only, such as in non-metaphorical NPs like eenDet1 zoonN1 van een buurmanN2 (a son of a neighbour), but of the whole NP. In this contribution, we hope to make it plausible that there might be a more adequate explanation based on semantic factors.
