Summary/Abstract: Many discussions have recently been evoked by the changes in the Polish system of education, concerning, among others, lowering the school starting age, obligatory preschool for five-year- -olds and increasing the parents’ power to make decisions. In polemics, reference was repeatedly made to the situation of children in other European countries. The following article is an attempt at an analytical presentation of the Polish situation compared to other European countries, based on the latest reports in relation to two important issues. The first part relates to the age at which children start primary school, the possibility of delaying this moment and the conditions that should be met in both situations. The second part contains a comparison of the scope of influence of parents on the child’s school career during the preschool and early school years. The summary draws attention to the fact that the changes that have been introduced in Poland may lead not only to better performance of pupils in the following years, but also to a greater parental involvement in the process of education. Note, however, that this is only the beginning of a process and there are still many problems to solve ad many demands to implement. Furthermore, it is not just an idea or a project that is important, but it is also worth looking at the way of its implementation. Therefore, it might be a good idea to look at education systems in other European countries in a critical way.
