Summary/Abstract: In a conversation following the publication of his selected works for the American market, Professor Terry Eagleton, literary critic and author with a Marxist background, speaks of the beginnings and evolution of cultural studies in Great Britain, his exemplars – the works of Raymond Williams and Louis Althusser – his disagreements with and at times harsh criticism of some of the most influential authors of postmodern and post-colonial discourse, his political interests and commitment to the problems of Ireland, his extensive writings as critic and author, and the topicality and indispensability of an on-going critique of culture and of the very concept of culture in the world and the environment in which we live.
