Summary/Abstract: Estonian expatriates and their descendants have published over 400 belletristic works in 25 foreign languages. A majority of the translations have appeared in English and Swedish. Of more widely known authors, a greater number of translated works can be attributed to Arved Viirlaid, Ain Kalmus, Valev Uibopuu and August Gailit, but the largest area of distribution belongs to a travel book ”Sailing to freedom” by a journalist Voldemar Veedam, which has been translated into more than twenty languages. Those of the Estonian authors who were born and educated outside Estonia have predominantly produced their works in foreign languages. On the whole the literary production of Estonian authors in exile has remained rather marginal and unfamiliar in all their countries of residence.
