Characteristics of information security systems in small and medium sized enterprises

Summary/Abstract: The management of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), regardless of their size, is associated with the use of information and communication technologies (ICT). This naturally leads to the accumulation of large-scale datasets that are very important for them to function, and which the information systems have the task of organizing rationally and protecting reliably. Treatment of this task presumes to define a number of requirements with respect to security and to find practical and appropriate solutions. Because of their specificity SMEs have limited resources and no possibility to build an overall system for information security, consistent with all conceptual and technological requirements. The objectives of this paper are to reveal which are the main risks and threats for small and medium enterprises, related to their infor­mation security and to give some pragmatic solutions consistent to their financial and technological capabilities.
